Introduction

Institute of Extreme Mechanics (IEM) was established on May 25, 2019. The Institute is led by the fellow of Chinese Academy of Science, Prof. Xiaojing Zheng, and adheres to “standing at the forefront, serving for aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology as well as scientific research, and leading the development of mechanics” for the purpose, as well as brings together the strengths of mechanics discipline of Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU), introduces high-level talents in the field of extreme mechanics at home and abroad, and builds an international first-class, domestic top, open and international mechanics research platform and high-level personnel training base.

IEM consists of 5 research centers, including Center of Dynamics and Control of Ultra-large Structure in Space, Center of Extreme Mechanics in Aeroengine, Center of Structure Mechanics in Extreme Conditions, Center of Extreme Aerodynamics and Control, Center of Mechanics in Extreme Electromagnetic Environment and Center of Aerospace System Mechanics.

IEM has 29 faculty members, 27 teachers, including 2 academicians, 2 winners of National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars and 7 national talents.

Based on mechanics, the Institute has cross-fertilized materials, physics, biology and other disciplines to incubate new growth points in mechanics, and promote the leap-forward development in aeronautics, astronautics, and marine science and technology.
