On May 6, Prof. Zheng Xiaojing, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief professor of Mechanics Topping Base Class of Northwestern Polytechnic University (NPU), gave a lecture entitled "Thoughts on Mechanics Topping Base Class of NPU" to the first-year students of Mechanics Topping Base Class, and had a cordial exchange with teachers and students. The participants of the seminar included Yu Hui, the secretary of the Party Committee of School of Aeronautics, the relevant persons in charge of the College of Education and Experimentation, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Institute of Extreme Mechanics, and the representatives of lecturers and academic tutors of each college, totaling more than 40 people. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Yanbo Xie.

In the report, Prof. Zheng focused on “Why do we want to run the mechanics class of NPU? How are we going to run the NPU mechanics class?”, “Can we run the NPU mechanics class well?” and “Can we do a good job of NPU mechanics class?”. The three questions were introduced and analyzed in depth. Starting from "Prof. Xuesen Qian 's Question", Prof. Zheng introduced that the cultivation of top-notch talents is the result of the current international environment and national development, and demonstrated the important role of mechanics in various engineering fields. She explained the target orientation, philosophy, reform and initiatives for the cultivation of mechanics top students in NPU, and the fact that NPU has excellent foundation and conditions for the cultivation of mechanics top talents. She expressed that we are confident to cultivate industry leaders with strategic scientist potential in the field of “aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology” for the country through the mechanics top-notch base. She also encouraged the students to pursue and take up the responsibility, integrate their personal ideals into the development of the motherland, and be the new era strugglers with family feelings.

In the discussion and exchange session, students spoke enthusiastically and asked questions concerned directions, goals and planning, etc. Prof. Zheng answered them one by one. After the meeting, academician Zheng Xiaojing took a group photo with all the participating students and teachers.

From this activity, the students interest in mechanics was greatly enhanced, and their belief in pursuing their studies diligently and becoming successful in the base class of mechanics was strengthened. The students expressed that they should keep in mind the mission of the times and actively participate in the field of aerospace mechanics to contribute to national development and social progress.
